The Inuit used sleds as well as animal skin covered boats. Other modes of transportation included snowshoes, toboggans, canoes, and sleds. In order to survive, the Inuit needed to be able to travel long distances. Dog sleds were also very popular with the Inuit. With the introduction of the snowmobile in the 1960s, many Northern Canadians became much more mobile and connected (nowadays mobile and connected means that you have a cell phone). In the Arctic, the snowmobile changed the hunting, herding and trapping patterns of the Inuit. The vehicle largely replaced the dogsled.
History Trivia: Kayak (the Inuit called this a qajaq) is a long miniature boat. It was invented about 4400 years ago by ancient Greenlandic Inuits, as a piece of hunting equipment. A Qajaq was made of the few available materials – driftwood, skin, bone, and sinew. Kayaks are most generally associated with seal hunting and whale hunting. Achievements & Special Recognition: Every now and then an applicant comes along that is outstanding in their knowledge and piloting skills. Carmel was one of those applicants. Carmel passed her private pilot checkride earlier in October, less than 1 month after her first lesson. Her first lesson was on September 14 and by October 7 she had her Private Pilot certificate with only 40 hours in her logbook. She flew to Commercial Pilot standards and had Flight Instructor level of knowledge for the subject areas. Here’s a quote from Harry “She performed some of the maneuvers exactly the way I would have with my 10,000 plus hours”. Excellent job Carmel.
Aviation/Aviators in the news: Veteran pilots of the first World War started to revolutionize travel in the Arctic with the airplane. These pilots could take their planes to places that no boat could reach. Air travel provided year around service to some remote areas since it was not seasonal travel such as dog sleds over frozen lakes. The airplane could cross the lake frozen or not. Pictured here is a Curtiss Jenny. The Jenny became the backbone of American postwar civil aviation.

How about a “barn find” that is 1,000s of years old! In 2016, Italian scientists reported “the oldest snowshoe in the world” discovered in the Dolomites and dated to between 3800 and 3700 B.C. Earlier this month Brian passed his CFII checkride with Harry. He did an excellent job. He did have some added pressure because the FAA was sitting in the back seat for Harry’s annual observation ride. Great job Brian.
Weather in the news: Since we’re highlighting transportation of the Arctic, how about a visit to Cape Dorset? The warm season lasts for 3.0 months, from June 11 to September 12, with an average daily high temperature above 40°F. The hottest month of the year at Cape Dorset Airport is July, with an average high of 51°F and low of 42°F. Dorset Island or Cape Dorset Island is one of the Canadian Arctic islands located in Hudson Strait, Nunavut, Canada.

Children of the frozen north were most likely playing with toys that mimicked what their parents were using for transportation, like this Sno Wiz. This “trike” configuration sled is part of the TWA museum collection. Called a Sno Wiz made by the Frederick Willys Co Inc.

Prototypes: In 1935 Joseph Bombardier assembled and successfully tested the first snowmobile. It was a vehicle with a sprocket wheel and a track drive system, and it was steered by skis. There were many vehicles before this that used skis, however Joseph’s is considered the first snowmobile. Click on the image for a larger view.
Nautical Notes: For water travel, the Inuit used various types of skin covered boats/Qajaqs such as pictured below.
Umiaks were also very popular with the Inuit. A umiak is an open boat made of animal hide stretched over a wooden frame. Some of these were large enough to hold about 20 people. The University of Alaska Museum has remains of an umiak that is estimated to be 1,000 years old. By the 20th century, outboard motors were used on umiaks.
Animals in the headlines: The work dog of the Arctic is the Husky and other types pulling dogs. The Northern Inuit Dog, along with its offshoot breed lines the Tamaskan dog, the British Timber dog and the Utonagan, is a breed of dog developed from a 1980s breeding project in the United Kingdom with the objective of producing a dog breed that resembles wolves. Harry & Pat’s dog Jett is a Tamaskan. Here’s Jett’s handmade dog sled that she is learning to pull.

Achievements & Special Recognition: Harry reached a major milestone earlier this month. 10,000 flight hours in the log book!
Aviation/Aviators in the news: On October 10, 1931, Captain Basil Rowe and his crew took delivery of the first Sikorsky S-40 from the Sikorsky plant. It was flown to the Anacosta Naval Station where Mrs. Hoover christened it “American Clipper”. This was the first Pan American plane to carry the name “Clipper”- the other two were the “Carribean Clipper” and the “Southern Clipper”. Pan American never used the S-40 as an amphibian so they removed the wheels to save weight. The flying S-40 normal range was about 500 miles. and it was kept on the Caribbean. Only three were built, all for Pan American and both Lindbergh and Sikorsky were already planning the S-42. The S-40s would provide safe, reliable service for Pan American into World War when they were passed on to the U.S. Navy, the “American Clipper” itself would be scrapped in 1943

Here’s a Wig Wam Motel and Indian Gasoline Station. Have you ever stayed in a Wig Wam motel? You can. There’s one located on the historic Route 66. During the 50s and 60s, these were popular tourist attractions. Nowadays there are fewer and fewer of them.
Earlier this month, the Flymall team attended the District Harley Davidson Labor Day party. Beer, bikes, bikinis, BBQ, band, whats not to like. Click here for pictures from the event.

Prototypes: Here’s a very cool 1955 Buick Wildcat. Buick would go on the use the Wildcat name on production vehicles.
Nautical Notes: An Ekranoplan is a giant, ground effect vehicle that resembles an aircraft but is technically a maritime ship, that uses ground effect lift to basically fly above the surface of the water. Russian has built several of these.
Here’s an interesting story on how a maritime storm and a ship helped solve the case of two missing persons. In August of 1983 high winds made the Phillip R. Clarke drop anchor in Duluth Harbor in order to regain control of the boat’s drift. Upon raising the starboard anchor, the crew was shocked. The anchor had hooked a car containing two decomposing bodies, crushed by the many boats as they sailed through the shallow harbor. The car had gone missing about five years prior and there hadn’t been any leads.
More history being preserved. The Vasa ship capsized and sank in Stockholm in 1628. After over 330 years on the sea bed, the warship was salvaged and the Vasa Museum built around the only completely intact and best-preserved 17th-century ships in existence.
Animals in the headlines: Did you know that Lassie was actually a male dog. On the TV series Lassie was referred to as a she. Lassie was actually played by a male dog named Pal. Many of Pal’s descendants would go on the play the part of Lassie in films and TV shows.

Achievements & Special Recognition: Rachel passed her instrument checkride earlier this month with Harry. Great job Rachel. This was her second checkride with Harry. She is headed to MIT with a full scholarship. She was also accepted Princeton, USAF Academy, Coast Guard Academy, Johns Hopkins, and numerous other well known colleges. She wants to be a fighter pilot for the US military.
Tom passed his flight instructor checkride earlier this month with Harry. He did an outstanding job. Every maneuver was textbook perfect. Excellent job Tom. This has been his life goal since he was 14 years old.
Aviation/Aviators in the news: Over the years, Harry has nominated a few pilots for the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. This month he has started the process for two other aviators that meet the criteria. One of the nominees was the owner of an aircraft that Harry brokered and sold for him. And the other is a retired American Airlines A&P and private pilot. In upcoming newsletters, we’ll have more information on these two aviators.

Barn Finds/Hangar Finds: In the past, we have brought you many barn finds, a wall find, hangar finds, mine find (click here for the post on the mine find), scrap pile find (click here for the post on the scrap pile find), and more. This month we have a curb find (sidewalk find). Harry noticed an old Raleigh bicycle sitting outside of a local bicycle shop (it had been there for a few weeks). One day Harry asked if it was for sale and the owner said that someone just left it there after hours one evening (abandoned it he said). The owner of the shop said to Harry “It’s yours if you want it. Just take it free of charge”. We’re still doing research, however, we believe this to be a 1974 Raleigh Tourist DL-1. It now resides in our collection along side some of bicycles made in England; the Coventry Rotarty Tandem and the Geared Facile. It has found a good home. Click on the image for a larger view.

Weather in the news: A sign of the times. As we get closer to the peak of hurricane season, we tend to see more and more storms in the eastern Atlantic. Here’s a snap shot of the weather may on August 18 2021 showing two tropical storms hitting the states at the same time.
We ended August 2021 with a Category 4 hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast.
And on August 30, we had 3 tropical storms in the Atlantic.

Prototypes: Often when one thinks of prototypes, we’re envisioning a new car concept or motorcycle, and maybe even an aircraft. This month we’re going to cover some of the unique braking systems found on bicycles.
The first bicycle called a Laufmachine, was designed by Karl Drais in 1817. This bike had a pivoting shoe that was pressed against the rear tire to slow the bike down.
On November 23, 1897, Abram W. Duck of Duck’s Cyclery in Oakland, California was granted a patent for his Duck Roller Brake (U.S. Patent 594,234). The duck brake used a rod operated by a lever on the handlebar to pull twin rubber rollers against the front tyre, braking the front wheel. This system is very similar to the braking system on our 1974 Raleigh.
Here is a picture of the front brake on the Raleigh.
Our 1885 Geared Facile uses a “spoon” type braking system. This system uses a lever on the handlebars to press a “spoon” against the front wheel to slow the bicycle.
Our 1898 Rex bicycle uses a small metal plate that presses on the front wheel to slow the bike. The rider is required to remove his/her feet from the pedals and shift them to this lever.
Our 1886 Coventry uses a band type brake system. I leather or rubber band is secured around the hub and is operated by a hand lever.
Our Raleigh bicycle has a Sturmey-Archer 3 speed hub. Sturmey-Archer began in Nottingham England in 1902 with the invention of the world’s first 3-speed internal gear hub for bicycles. The company was founded in 1902 by Henry Sturmey and James Archer under the guidance of Frank Bowden, the primary owner of Raleigh.
Nautical Notes: Did you know??? A few of the songs from London Town, the sixth studio album by Paul McCartney’s band “Wings” were recorded on a yacht named “Fair Carol” while in the Virgin Islands. The working title of the album was “Water Wings”. The idea of recording songs on a boat most likely came from Denny Laine whom made a visit to a floating studio in the United States. Paul McCartney arranged for a recording studio to be built on the yacht Fair Carol. Paul and Linda hired another yacht to serve as a floating home for themselves and their three daughters, while a third chartered yacht housed Wings Joe English, Jimmy McCulloch, and Denny Laine. Here’s another cool piece for this month with a nautical theme as well as a Beatles theme (sort of). The Beatles as well as Paul McCartney have performed in the Netherlands numerous times. And the Netherlands is home to the very unique Veluwemeer Aqueduct.

This month: This month is all about early transportation vehicles including; the earliest know wheeled vehicle, early wheels, Pesse canoe, Stephan Farffler wheel chair, 1st pilot license, aircraft of the 1400s, and more. Coming in September or October, a local person receives some recognition from Mercedes for his high mileage vehicle.
Earlier this month, the Kraemers hosted their annual 4th of July cookout and car show. The weather was perfect and everyone had a good time. Click here for pictures from the event.
History Trivia: Have you ever wondered when thew first “wheeled” vehicle was made? The earliest well-dated image of a wheeled vehicle was found on a Bronocice pot. The pot was radiocabon dated to 3500-3350 BCE. The pot or ceramic vase was discovered in 1976 during the archaeological excavation of a large Neolithic settlement in Bronocice near Kraków. Achievements & Special Recognition: This month we want to congratulate Elizabeth for passing her commercial pilot checkride with Harry. She did the checkride in her own plane, how cool is that? She is only 19 years old and still does not have her driver’s license. So she can fly a plane for hire, however she cannot drive herself to the airport. Elizabeth is a very gifted and talented pilot. She’ll do very well in her aviation career.
Aviation/Aviators in the news: In the 1400s, Leonardo da Vinci designed the four-person aerial screw (pictured below), a helicopter like aircraft. Much of his work remained unknown until about 1797. Just think how amazing this was for him to come up with this, way back in the 1400s. Perhaps he was inspired by maple tree seeds (what we now call helicopters because of the way they fall).

Weather in the news: On July 25, we had some air mass or popup thunderstorms in the area. We captured a screen shot of one with a cell shaped like a heart.
Three Wheel Association (TWA): The earliest vehicle in our collection of rare three wheelers, is this Civil War era wheelchair. From what we know, it is all original. It was made around the 1860s. Its still fully functional.
We are in the process of having a working replica made of Stephan Farffler’s manumotive carriage that he made in the year 1655. Look for updates in future newsletters. This vehicle will make it’s first public appearance at the Laytonsville Cruise In. Stay tuned!

Prototypes: Most believe that the chariot originated in Mesopotamia in about 3000 BC. Historians have discovered monuments from that era that depict battle parades which include heavy vehicles with solid wheels, their bodywork framed with wood and covered with animal skins. A two-wheeled version of this chariot soon proved superior in battle because of its higher maneuverability.
The first “bicycle” was made around 1817. Referred to as a dandy horse. It was actually invented in Germany by Karl Drais who called it a Laufmaschine. Other early names included vélocipède, draisienne, pedestrian curricle, and hobby-horse.
Nautical Notes: Since we’re covering early transportation this month, boats are included as well. Evidence suggest that boats were used over 900,000 years ago. The earliest boats were most likely dugouts. The oldest known boat in the world is the Pesse canoe, found in the Netherlands, is a dugout made from the hollowed tree trunk of a Pinus sylvestris that was constructed somewhere between 8200 and 7600 BC. Pictured here is the Pesse canoe.
Animals in the headlines: Dog sleds date back to at least 2000 BC. We have an authentic dog sled in our transportation museum. Jett is currently being trained to pull the sled. This sled was hand made by a husband and wife in southern PA. Click on the images for a larger view.

Weather in the news: Did you know that The Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. was the most intense (in terms of pressure) Atlantic hurricane to make landfall and it was also tied with with Hurricane Dorian in 2019 for the strongest maximum substantiated winds (185 mph).
Three Wheel Association (TWA): A classic car club in Germany discovered this one of a kind three wheeler. It is not clear if it was a “factory built” or “production” vehicle. There are no serial number numbers or ID on the vehicle. It has a two speed transmission, oil lamps, and a foot operated bellows horn.

Prototypes: The 1968 LeMans Sport Truck was originally built as a GM prototype design proposal and is said to have inspired the GMC Sprint. It is not clear how many were built.
Nautical Notes: George Pocock was an inventor (1774–1843) that was known for inventing the Charvolant, an early carriage that was powered by two kites. He advocated other uses for kites including auxiliary sail power for ships. We hope to have a replica of this vehicle in our transportation museum when it opens.

Aviation/Aviators in the news: Earlier this month there was a midair collision in Denver. One plane landed safely and the Cirrus pulled the chute and landed in a field. Click here for a YouTube video with the actual ATC audio. From listening to the ATC tape, it sounds like the Cirrus overshot his turn to final and hit the Metroliner.
On May 23rd, we celebrated Otto Lilienthal’s 173rd birthday. Lilienthal’s research was well known to the Wright brothers, and they credited him as a major inspiration for their decision to pursue manned flight. However, they abandoned his aeronautical data after two seasons of gliding and began using their own wind tunnel data.
Of all the men who attacked the flying problem in the 19th century, Otto Lilienthal was easily the most important. … It is true that attempts at gliding had been made hundreds of years before him, and that in the nineteenth century, Cayley, Spencer, Wenham, Mouillard, and many others were reported to have made feeble attempts to glide, but their failures were so complete that nothing of value resulted.— Wilbur Wright

A storm to remember. The Great Blizzard of 1899. This storm affected most of the United States. Tampa Florida even had snow flurries during this storm. Some areas of the country had over 30 inches of snow.

Nautical Notes: This month we’re featuring the “Narrowboat“. The Narrowboat is a type of canal boat used in the narrow locks of the United Kingdom. They were very important during their Industrial Revolution. Now these are offered as a vacation cruise and they are very popular as a live aboard houseboat. One of the three wheelers (1912 AC Delivery Trike) in our collection was built in Thames Ditton which is on the River Thames. It is likely that the early AC factory had supplies delivered by a Narrowboat. Click on the image for a larger view.
This segment goes along with our Weather In The News this month. The SS John V Moran was lost during the 1899 storm on Lake Michigan. John V. Moran left Milwaukee for Muskegon, on February 9, 1899, at 1:00 p.m., loaded with barrels of flour and other cargo. At around midnight, while travelling through an ice field, a piece of ice punctured her hull, causing a serious leak.
Animals in the headlines: a giant female tortoise found in the Galapagos Islands was of a species last reported 112 years ago. The tortoise was discovered on Fernandina Island during a 2019 expedition. the Fernandina Giant Tortoise, or the species Chelonoidis phantasticus.

Humans have achieved power flight on another planet with the first helicopter flight on Mars.
117 years ago, Orville Wright became the first person to achieve controlled flight in a powered aircraft. 113 years ago, a bicycle maker Paul Cornu made history by becoming the first man to fly in a rotary wing aircraft.
April 19, 2021, the United States of America has flown “Ingenuity,” a robotic helicopter that has just achieved the first powered and fully controlled atmospheric flight on another planet. The Ingenuity carries a piece of fabric from the wing of the 1903 Wright Flyer. How cool is this???
Earlier this month, Joe passed his private pilot checkride with Harry. Joe started his training at a 2400 foot strip, so short field landings were his specialty. Great job Joe!

Meet Alma Heflin, she was the 1st commercial woman test pilot. She earned her pilots license in the late 1930s and shortly after that, she started working for the Piper Aircraft Company. Heflin flew the first Piper J-2 Cub and now this aircraft resides in the National Air & Space Museum.

Edward Butler. Butler showed plans for his three-wheeled petrol vehicle at the Stanley Cycle Show in London in 1884, two years earlier than Karl Benz, who is generally recognized as the inventor of the modern automobile. Butler is the person associated as being the first to use the word “petrol”. Click on the image for a larger view.
Here’s a cool three wheeler, its a tire service motorcycle with sidecar. Checkout the phone number in the ad. Its from a time when we used phone number exchanges.
Arlen Ness made a name for himself as a custom motorcycle builder and his custom bikes are some of the most valuable bikes on the market today. We happened to come across this one off custom bike that he built. You actually drive it from the sidecar. Click on the images for a larger view.
140 years ago Gustave Trouvé demonstrated an English lever driven tricycle with his motor and battery invention, creating one of the first electric vehicles. Richards of England recently recreated his historic vehicle and demonstrated it as a functional vehicle.

Prototypes: The maiden flight of the 737 was on 9 April 1967, just two years after the launch of the project. In command was Boeing’s assistant Director of Flight Operations, Brien Wygle and the Chief Test Pilot, Lew Wallick was co-pilot.
Nautical Notes: In December 1984, a Chukchi hunter spotted a herd of up to 3,000 beluga whales struggling for breathing room in small pools of open water in the ice-covered waters off the Chukchi Peninsula. Easterly winds had packed the narrow Senyavin Strait with drift ice up to 12 feet thick, creating a wide ice pack that the whales could not cross on a single breath. While the locals tried to keep the animals alive by feeding them with frozen fish and keeping the breathing holes open, it soon became evident that the belugas would eventually perish unless they could be freed.
In February 1985, Moskva was called from the Bering Sea in to break a channel through the ice pack and free the trapped herd. On 22 February, the icebreaker finally reached the belugas, but at first they refused to follow the ship to open water. However, when the crew began playing classical music through the ship’s loudspeakers, the whales finally followed Moskva to the unfrozen sea. In the end, it was estimated that about 2,000 whales escaped while slightly more than 500 were taken by the local hunters. Using Moskva for the rescue operation, dubbed “Operation Beluga”, cost the Soviet government about $80,000

Who made the first retractable hardtop? Most will say Ford did in the 1950s. It was actually made in the 1930s by Peugeot. The Peugeot Model 401D Eclipse was the first car to have a retractable hardtop.

Most folks involved in aviation know the name William Lear. Bill as he was called, was the name behind the Lear Jet, the company he founded in the early 1960s. Bill actually got his start in aviation designing and building aircraft radios and navigation equipment. But did you know that Bill was the inventor of the car radio? He also invented the 8-track tape.
Aviation/Aviators in the news: When we think of the Stearman, most of us picture the Boeing Stearman. Here’s a Stearman LT-1 (Light Transport)… only 3 were built. It carried 4 passengers in the cabin and had a cruise speed of 115 MPH.

Car/Motorcycle Show News: The motor racing world is sad this month due to the passing of Sabine Schmitz. She was a German professional racing driver for BMW and Porsche.
Honda, a well know name in the automotive and motorcycle industry. Their motorcycles are one of the most reliable bikes on the market. That wasn’t always the case. Back in 1947 their first motorcycle, the Honda A-Type probable was not too reliable. It was nothing more than a motorized bicycle. Click on the image for a larger view.

Here’s some news/updates for the Laytonsville Cruise In; For 2021 we will continue with the award night (depending on sponsors) for the third Friday of every month starting in May until October 2021. This year will be different. This year we are encouraging kids to bring their rides and display them for a chance to win an award. The award nights will just have awards for the kids vehicles (bicycles, cars, etc). There will be one award for adults on the third Friday and this award will be chosen by the kids that enter a vehicle. Prototypes: In August, 1965 GM Design rolled out the first “Panther” fiberglass model for a management review. The Panther would later have its’ name changed to Camaro before its’ ’67 introduction. Notice the Panther logo on the front fender behind the front wheel.
Nautical Notes: Since the 1960s, Harry has enjoyed repurposing items into unique one-of-a-kind pieces. Here is a vintage knife holder that he repurposed into a PT boat (this was made sometime in the mid 1960s). Lost since the late 1960s, many of the parts have disappeared, however it is still a very cool piece. Click on each image for a larger view.

History Trivia:Edmond Berger is credited with inventing spark plugs on February 2 1839. With internal combustion engines being in their early stages of development at this time, his device would have been both revolutionary and rudimentary.

Aviation/Aviators in the news: Here’s a strange vehicle that is part sail boat, part glider. In the early 1920’s a Swiss inventor named John Domenjoz set out to create a glider that was capable of taking off using only the force of the wind. Two prototypes were built and one did actually fly, although just for a short distance.

Nautical Notes: Here’s a throwback to the 1970’s when Harry was in the Sea Scouts. This was long before the Sea Scouts was a part of the Boy Scouts. Harry was in Sea Scouts Ship 370 based in Dundalk Maryland. They had numerous boats that Harry sailed on. The two most memorable were the Mermaid and the Burch. Below are the actual ships that Harry sailed on.

Aviation/Aviators in the news: In the early 1940s, the Junkers Jumo 223 engine was in the news. It was an experimental 24-cylinder aircraft engine. It had four banks of six cylinders in a rhomboid configuration, with four crankshafts one at each vertex of the rhombus, and 48 pistons. Only one is believed to have been made. The whereabouts of the engine is unknown.

Car/Motorcycle Show News: Here is a cool accessory for your car that you have probably never seen. Its called a “Pathfinder”. These were available in England and America in the early 1900s. At the time, roads were non existent or they were in poor condition. It was very likely that you would have something puncture your tire. So this was invented. Its so simple, maybe it even worked. It was just a brush in front of the tire used to “sweep away” anything that may puncture your tire.

Checkout Harry’s new section of the Flymall called “How Things Fly“. Years ago, Harry developed a children’s program to teach them how different things fly. What was unique about this program was the fact that the kids did hands on activities/experiments to learn how things fly. The way Harry presented the program was that the kids asked the questions and the kids answered the questions via hands on activities using items that they would have around the house. It is only $25 for unlimited access to the page. It is still under development and should have all of the material live within a month or so.
Weather in the news: Dec 24 2020 brought us a major storm system that stretched from the Gulf of Mexico all the way up in to Canada.
And on January 1 2021, we had another storm system that stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada.
Three Wheel Association (TWA): Did you know that the world’s first mass produced motorcycle was a 3 wheeler? Here is an 1898 De Dion-Bouton Tricycle, built in France 1896-1901. It is considered the 1st mass produced motorcycle, 15,000 units sold.
The above unique car made from a Jawa motorcycle was discovered in Minsk. This one of a kind was made by Alexander Dlotovsky, the first president of the Belarusian Union of Designers. He used Jawa 250 motorcycle and went from there. Click here for more ready on this unique three wheeler.

Prototypes: Have you ever seen a stainless steel car? Ford made a few, 11 to be exact. Here is a short history on them. In 1935, officials at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Division and the Ford Motor Company collaborated on an experiment by creating a stainless steel car for Ford to help promote the quality and use of their stainless steel. The idea took shape in the form of a 1936 Deluxe Sedan. Six vehicles were produced. Allegheny Ludlum and Ford would later collaborate on two more stainless models, a 1960 Thunderbird (2) and a 1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible (3). When it was over, a total 11 cars were built. The vehicles were in active service on the roads covering many miles and have been displayed throughout the United States and Europe. The cars now either reside in private collections and/or on display in Auto Museums.
Nautical Notes: Here’s something that combines boating and flying a helicopter. Meet the Giro Boat.
The Giro Boat was created by a 26 year old American living in the UK named John Hofstetter. Hofstetter had some experience designing aircraft. It was said that with just one hour of training, you could pilot a Giro Boat like a pro. Hofstetter also had plans to create a Giro Boat pilot school where you could learn to fly.
Some sad news this month for a passenger on the S.S. Minnow. Dawn Wells who played Mary Ann on Gilligan’s Island passed away Dec 30 2020 of Covid.
Since we just brought in a new year, have you heard the story of the SS Warrimoo? Well here is it. Enjoy!
The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo’s position was LAT 0º 31′ N and LONG 179 30′ W. The date was 31 December 1899. “Know what this means?” First Mate Payton broke in, “We’re only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line”. Captain Phillips, excited, wanted to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ship’s position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre position were many:
The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer.
The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter.
The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899.
In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900.
This ship was therefore not only in:
Two different days,
Two different months,
Two different years,
Two different seasons
And in two different centuries – all at the same time!
Harry obtained a very cool item for the Kraemer Aviation transportation museum. We believe it is a maritime channel marker light. Its very similar to the lamps on top of the Hario Wireless Towers in Japan. Our lamp stands about 3 foot tall and is fully functional.
