October 20, 1952: Douglas test pilot William B. Bridgeman completes the first test flight of the experimental Douglas X-3. He remains aloft for 19 minutes. The high speed research aircraft is propelled by two Westinghouse J34-WE-17 engines rated at 4850 lbs static trust with afterburning and has a Mach 2 airframe. Under powered the aircraft can not even achieve Mach 1 in level flight
