Today in Aviation History
August 5, 1930: Florence "Pancho" Barnes establishes a speed record for women by flying her Travel Air monoplane at 196.19 mph at Los Angeles, CA. She earned her nickname by becoming the first woman to fly from the US to Mexico. She goes on to establish a bar and restaurant that becomes the hangout for many of the test pilots at Edwards AFB during the 1950s.
