April 20, 1953: Test pilots complete the first flight of the Chase C-123B Avitruc, a twin engine medium assault transport powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800-99W radial piston engines. The C-123B is an outgrowth of the earlier XC-123, which itself stemmed from an experimental glider, the XCG-20.
