In Air Show news this month, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, attracts more than 600,000 people and 10,000 airplanes each July. For those that missed it, here are a few pictures from Harry’s friend Eido Kamak.

History Trivia: On July 5 1917, the Fokker Dr.I made it’s first flight. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (the Red Baron) became famous flying this model. Here’s Harry in a friend’s Fokker Dr.I.

On July 6 1957, Paul McCartney met John Lennon. And the rest is history. Shortly before 7pm on July 6 1957, The Quarry Men were setting up for an evening performance inside St. Peter’s Church Hall in Woolton, when mutual friend Ivan Vaughn introduced 15 year old Paul McCartney to the 16 year old leader, singer and guitarist for The Quarrymen, John Lennon. John later asked Paul to join The Quarrymen and Paul debuted with the band at New Clubmoor Hall on October 18 1957.

On July 8 2011, Space Shuttle Atlantis launched from Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center at 11:29 a.m. EDT. This marked the start of the STS-135 mission—the final, historic flight of the U.S. Space Shuttle Program, concluding 30 years of operations.

On July 16 1969, Apollo 11 launched. This would become the first mission to land humans on the Moon. Armstrong pilots Eagle to its landing on the Moon on July 20 1969. July 24 1969, Apollo 11 returns to earth.

July 22 1933. Wiley Post completed the 1st solo flight round the world and arrived back at Floyd Bennett Field. Fifty thousand people greeted him on his return on July 22 after 7 days, 18 hours, 49 minutes. The Winnie Mae’s cabin could not be pressurized, so he worked with Russell S. Colley of the B.F. Goodrich Company to develop what became the world’s first practical pressure suit. Three pressure suits were fabricated for Wiley Post; only the final version proved successful. The first suit ruptured during a pressure test. The redesigned second suit used the same helmet as the first but when tested was too tight and they were unable to remove it from Post, so they had to cut him out thus destroying the suit. The third suit was redesigned from the previous two. In the first flight using the third suit on September 5 1934, Post reached an altitude of 40,000 feet above Chicago. Eventually flying as high as 50,000 feet, Post discovered the jet stream and made the first major practical advances in pressurized flight.

July 23 1983, Air Canada flight 143 became the worlds heaviest and largest commercial passenger service glider to ever take to the skies… Click here for Harry’s post on this covering the full story.

July 24, Happy heavenly birthday Amelia Earhart who was born on July 24 1897.

Achievements & Special Recognition: On July 7 2015, Pat passed her initial CFI checkride. She has been a flight instructor for 11 years now.

Aviation/Aviators in the news: Here’s a flashback from the early 1990s. Harry is in the left seat of a friends ultralight. Way back when you could fly ultralights out of KGAI. It did not have a radio or transponder. No electrical system at all.

Car/Motorcycle Show News:   The Laytonsville Cruise In is the place to be on a Friday night in Montgomery County.  The Laytonsville Cruise In was started by Harry in 2010. It has become one of the most popular cruise ins in the area. You can follow Harry on Facebook for daily updates during the many shows and events he attends.

Friday July 17 was an award/trophy night at the Laytonsville Cruise In. Jim had his newly acquired Speed Racer replica there.

July 24 was a very busy night at the Laytonsville Cruise In. We had about 130 plus cars there. Our Belgian Malinois Ace, spent the entire evening there and he was very well behaved. Click here for pictures from July 24 at the Laytonsville Cruise In.

Here’s a name that most gear heads and motorcycle riders will not know, Benjamin F. “Ben” (or “Benny”) Hardy. However, just about everyone will know of the iconic “Captain America” and “Billy” chopper motorcycles featured in the 1969 film Easy Rider. Ben Hardy made them! He was a legendary African-American custom motorcycle builder best known for creating the iconic “Captain America” and “Billy” chopper motorcycles. Benny was born on July 25 1991.

July 30 1962 Andrew Duncan Green was born. Andrew is a retired British Royal Air Force fighter pilot and world land speed record holder. He became the first person to officially break the sound barrier in a land vehicle.

In July of 2020, Raegan passed her private pilot checkride with Harry and he recently learned that she is now an A&P / IA. Excellent news!

Weather in the news: On Saturday, July 18, the day of the Wine Country Classic Boat Show, the weather did not cooperate. We had heavy rain for about 2 hours. Once the weather cleared up, it was a great afternoon on the lake. The location of the boat show was at the blue dot in the picture below.

Inspired by the legendary Morgan three-wheelers of the 1920s and ’30s, the Lomax 223 kit car combines vintage style with the mechanical components of the Citroën 2CV. Although many examples are titled by their 1970s donor-car dates — like this one, which was built on a 1975 2CV chassis — Lomax kits were introduced in 1982 by the Lomax Motor Company of Lincolnshire, England.

This three-wheeler, which was designed by Nigel Whall and weighs less than 1,000 pounds, is powered by the 2CV’s air-cooled flat-twin engine. The 223 designation is derived from its two-cylinder, two-seat, three-wheel format.

Lomax kits remained in production through several manufacturers until 2018-2019. While precise production records were not maintained, enthusiast estimates range from fewer than 2,000 to as many as 4,000.

Nautical Notes: Kelsey Pfendler has become the first American woman to row solo from California to Hawaii. She is also the fastest woman or man to have done so! Kelsey crossed the finish line in just under 44 days, breaking the previous women’s record of 86 days and the men’s record of 52 days! Excellent job Kelsey.

Earlier in July, the Flymall team spent 6 days in the town of Hammondsport NY on Keuka Lake boating.

July 17 was a travel day.

Pictures from Germantown to Hammondsport (the drive up). In these pictures you can see the air quality improve as we get closer to Hammondsport NY. This was at the time of the Canadian wildfires.

Pictures of the boats at Depot Park on July 17. Friday was the day that a lot of the boats were arriving for the big show on Saturday. The weather was perfect, the sun was shinning and we had blue skies.

The new Curtiss Park July 17. Pat & Harry visited the all new Curtiss Park on Friday. This park was still under construction in 2025 when we visited Hammondsport.

Dinner at Lakeside Louie’s on July 17. This is a nice location on the west side of the lake. The food is good and the views were speculator.

July 18 was the Classic Boat Show at Depot Park on the lake. Visit our Wine Country Classic Boats page on the Flymall for some videos including the boats leaving for the “Parade of Boats”, the “Parade of Boats”, and a few high speed passes after the parade.

In addition to the boat show on July 18, Pat & Harry visited the Champlin House.

July 19 the Flymall team took an afternoon cruise on the Pat II. Click here for more pictures. On the morning of July 19, Pat & Harry enjoyed watching the life guards set up the swimming lines/boundaries (they were removed for the boat show).

July 19 Jet skis in the late afternoon. Click here for more pictures. The water was choppy with a few whitecaps. The Jet Skis were a lot of fun.

After the wine cruise, Pat & Harry had dinner at the Timber Stone Grill. The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly. They offer locally brewed beer and local wine as well.

July 20 Pat & Harry explored Keuka Lake on a rented Geneva Sport Sun Chaser pontoon boat with lunch at the Switzerland Inn. Click here for more pictures. They departed from Depot Park and explored the entire lake including both parts of the “Y”.

On the afternoon of July 20, Pat & Harry enjoyed some wine tasting at Weis Vineyards.

They finished the day with some locally brewed beer at the Finger Lakes Beer Company.

July 21 Pat & Harry explored the lake on kayaks. They were hoping to see some turtles, however, none were sighted. The kayaking was cut short due to some storms coming. Click here for more pictures.

After the short kayaking adventure, Pat & Harry enjoyed lunch at the Switzerland Inn. The weather wasn’t the greatest for boating that day. The lake didn’t have a lot of boaters and the docks at the Switzerland Inn weren’t full of boats.

Pat & Harry ended Tuesday at the Keuka Creamery. Here you can wash your dog, wash your car, get a coffee & bagels, and get an ice cream. Plus they sell beer. This is within walking distance of the Best Western of Hammondsport. It is a nice local place with plenty of outdoor seating.

A little bird visited them while they were at Keuka Creamery.

July 22 they traveled back to Maryland. Click here for more pictures of the return trip to Germantown Maryland.

Riding The Rails: It was interesting to learn that the new Glenn Curtiss Park was an abandoned railroad property that was used as a landfill for many years.

Native American Indian Transportation: The Seneca tribe of the Iroquois lived around Keuka Lake, calling it “o-go-ya-ga” (the promontory). The name “Keuka” comes from a Native American phrase meaning “Canoe Landing”. Here’s a 1904 Peterborough canoe that was on display at the Wine Country Classic Boat Show this year.

Animals in the headlines: On Friday, July 10, the airport manager called Harry to relocate a very large snapping turtle that was on the runway. She was safely relocated to a nearby pond just outside of the airport fence. Click here for more pictures. This turtle was probably about 50 pounds or more.

Another animal is in the news this month. A Red-footed Booby was recently spotted found in the Chesapeake Bay. This tropical seabird is typically found near the equator, making it’s appearance in the Chesapeake Bay a rare surprise.

This month we’re remembering Delilah, our first Husky that passed away July 26 2009. She would often accompany Harry as he visited clients at local airports.

Earlier in July, Harry’s friend, Dor and his dog Hero spent an afternoon with Ace swimming in the pool. Hero is a natural swimmer. Click here for more pictures.
