March 6 1937, Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova was born. She was the first woman in space, having flown a solo mission on Vostok 6 on June 16 1963. She orbited the Earth 48 times spending almost three days in space. She is the only woman to have been on a solo space mission and is the last surviving Vostok cosmonaut. She remains the youngest woman to have flown in space and the youngest woman to fly in Earth orbit. She was neither a pilot nor a scientist. She was a factory worker who loved parachute jumping. It was this hobby that changed history. The Soviet space program was looking for women to send to space, and Tereshkova’s parachuting skills were exactly what they needed. Vostok cosmonauts had to eject from the capsule during reentry and parachute to the ground. She was selected from over 400 applicants in 1962.
