Frederick Tower Update

Friday, March 30th, 2012

The target opening date is May 1st for the Tower.  The Tower frequency will be 132.400, ground frequency will be 121.975, ATIS/AWOS 124.875. The operating hours are scheduled to be 7:00 a.m. to 9 p.m.  – 7 days a week.  After 9 p.m. the airfield reverts back to CTAF operations on frequency 132.400 (not 122.725). All pilot controlled lighting will operate on 132.400 after the Tower closes for the night. For safety purposes, the FBO will continue to monitor the 122.725 frequency for the next (6) months to alert any traffic not operating on the new 132.400 frequency.

Click on the link below for an illustration that indicates the movement area boundaries for the airfield. Blue indicates free movement, before entering the red you must contact the ground controller. The airport management is working on getting the boundary markings painted by May 1st, however if they cannot get this done in time there will be temporary signage at all of the boundary areas.

AOPA will be rescheduling our Towered Operations Seminar for April 24th, probably around 7 p.m. at the FSK Holiday Inn. AOPA will be sending out a formal announcement shortly. The Tower Manager (Todd Johnson), along with all of the new controllers will be attending the event. It will be a great time to meet your new Tower staff.

Rare British Motorcycle – Brough

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Brough Motorcycles were made by William E. Brough in Nottingham, England, from 1908 to 1926. Brough motorcycles were flat-tanked motorcycles that used a variety of engines. The first Brough motorcycles had single-cylinder engines but soon William Brough became devoted to the flat-twin engine design.

Originally William Brough’s son, George Brough, was a partner in his father’s company, but he split from it in 1919 and started his own factory, also in Nottingham. He named his motorcycles “Brough Superior”. Upon hearing the name of the new motorcycle company, his father made the comment, “I suppose that makes mine the Brough Inferior”.

Enclosed Self Balancing Motorcycle

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

As any avid biker will tell you, motorcycles have a lot of advantages over cars – they use less fuel, accelerate faster, are more maneuverable, can be parked in more places, and don’t incorporate the weight of extra seating for passengers who are non-existent on solo commutes. As many other people will tell you, however, motorcycles also leave their occupants open to the rain and cold, and can potentially tip over and scatter those occupants across the road. That’s where Lit Motors’ C-1 comes into the picture. It’s a proposed fully-enclosed two-passenger electric motorbike that uses an electronically-controlled gyroscopic stabilizing system to stay upright when stopped, or even when struck from the side in an accident.

Porsche A Stock Market Giant

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

Three years ago, Volkswagen found itself fearing a foreign takeover. Porsche, the company, decided to step in and start buying VW stock ostensibly to protect the landmark brand, widely fueling market expectations that it would eventually buy Volkswagen outright. Of course, this isn’t quite what came to pass.

Kitfox IV Appraisal

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

The aircraft is hangared at the Frederick Municipal Airport in Frederick, Maryland (KFDK).  The aircraft was built by the current owner Doug Kelly.  Overall the aircraft is in very good condition.  It has been painted to resemble the famous racing plane the Howard DGA-6 (Mister Mulligan).  Click here for more info on Mister Mulligan.

The aircraft was completed (built) by the owner from a kit (non “quick-build”) and gotten to flying stages between 1992 and 1998. Phase 1 was completed during the next six months. N213Y was kept on a trailer and stored in a garage between flights for about 3 years after which a hangar became available at KFDK.  The aircraft has been stored in the hangar since.

It should be noted that N213Y has numerous upgrades and modifications and overall the aircraft is in excellent condition.  The aircraft has systems that are usually found on larger and/or production aircraft such as the angle of attack indicating system and electric trim.  The aircraft is an excellent example of a home built aircraft.

A search of the NTSB and FAA databases showed no accidents or incidents.

This aircraft, N213Y, was personally inspected on February 9 2010 by Harry Kraemer an industry trained/certified appraiser at the Frederick Municipal Airport (KFDK).

The information herein has been prepared from many sources and believed to be correct. The appraiser cannot warrant the accuracy of the source material.  The appraiser referenced numerous websites for data and information to compute a fair market value on N213Y.  At the time of the appraisal there were no comparables listed on the many “aircraft for sale” websites.

An inspection and inventory was conducted by a physical examination of the external surfaces of the aircraft, cockpit and passenger cabin. It includes an inventory and assessment of condition of avionics, instrumentation and aircraft systems. No inspection plates were removed for internal inspection. Further, the logbooks and other aircraft records were carefully examined for compliance with FAA regulations relating to Airworthiness Directives, damage and maintenance history, along with other required inspections. All aircraft records were presumed to be authentic, unaltered, and signatures and inspections therein by persons designated and appropriately licensed.  AD compliance was attested to by referencing the date of last Annual Inspection or other appropriate Inspection.

The fair market value for N213Y is based on the research stated in this report and historical sales data versus appraisal values.

A visual inspection and log book analysis was performed 02/09/2012 on the aircraft N213Y at: Frederick Municipal Airport, located in Frederick, Maryland.  It is the opinion of this appraiser that the fair market value of the above aircraft is: $24,548.00 USD

Harley Davidson Car

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Yes, the legendary manufacturer of the classic Harley-Davidson motorcycle now long past celebrating its 100th Anniversary did indeed sell an automobile… well, kind of.

For many years in addition to its Big Twin cruisers and lighter weight Sportsters. Harley-Davidson made three-wheelers in the form of utility and police “trikes,” but they were Barney Rubble lumps compared to the svelte Mirage Fighter looks of the short-lived, but fast-paced Tri-Hawk, circa 1984. Chances ar you didn’t ogle one in your local Harley dealer’s showroom for they appeared only briefly, and were chalked up to a selling miscalculation and rather rapidly deselected from the Milwaukee line-up.
