How Things Fly

How Things Fly

Description

Welcome to Harry's "How Things Fly" program

When did the first "man made" object fly? What year? The Montgolfier brothers built parachutes as early as 1775 and they were building hot air balloons in 1782. And on 21 November 1783, the first free flight by humans was made.

Who can name some things that fly?

What do all of these have in common? Besides that they all fly!

They all interact with air or they all use air in one way or another.

What is air? Can we see it? Can we touch it? Does it weigh anything? If it does have weight, can we weigh it here today?

put some water in a plate with a candle in the center. Light the candle and then put a glass over the candle. The flame will burn out and create a low pressure that draws the water up into the glass.

put a straw in a glass of water, take a second straw and blow air across the straw in the water. this creates a low pressure and will suck water out of the glass.
