Detailed Information
Detailed Description
Massey Aerodrome MD1 & Massey Air Museum. The Massey Air Museum is small museum at Massey Aerodrome with a replica 1911 Wright Glider, Ercoupe and ten aircraft engines inside and a DC-3 and An-2 outside plus a life-size fiberglass Corsair, a rotating beacon tower and a working windmill with a wooden water tank. Massey seeks to recreate the atmosphere of a rural airport as it might have appeared post-WW2 shortly after 1945. Massey is on the Eastern Shore of Maryland about 50 minutes north of the Bay Bridge and 15 minutes south of Middletown, DE. Massey, MD is a two hour drive from Germantown, MD and Montgomery County Airpark (KGAI) is 64 NM from Massey (MD1)(direct). Massey Aerodrome is a Public Use airport dedicated to the preservation of Grassroots Aviation with a 3000’ x 100’ grass runway (ID: MD1). Massey was created out of farmland in 2001 by 4 pilots with a love of aviation - strictly as a hobby. One of the founders had always dreamt of owning his own airport so he and 3 like-minded pilots joined together to buy a 93 acre farm in Kent Co., Maryland. They got the permits and FAA certifications, excavated and seeded the runway, converted the grain storage barns into hangers and have been restoring planes and holding Fly-ins ever since. In 2015, five new partners joined the one remaining original partner to assure the continuing success of Massey. Visitors can enter the DC-3 and An-2 plus tour the community hangars which contain 14 planes including two Stearman, de havilland Chipmunk and Stinson Reliant. The airport is open 7 days a week, Everyone is Welcome to tour the museum when we are here from 11 AM to 4 PM - Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Closed Monday and Thursday). Guided tours are available. Calling ahead is recommended.
