Also pictured here is our 1980 AMF Harley Davidson Sportster with our 1974 Indian MX74 Dirt Bike. Indian Motorcycle and Harley Davidson. By 1903 they were rivals. Now these 2 are room mates in my garage. Indian had a 2 year head start in the motorcycle industry. Interesting note: Indian started making bicycles and then made motorcycles. While Harley Davidson started with motorcycles and then made bicycles.

here is a cutaway of a 1957 Sportster 900. This was the first year Sportster, with an actual displacement of 883cc. This was an improvement over the earlier K model with more displacement, higher compression, and of course the overhead valves. The first Sportsters were produced in September 1956 as 1957 models.

Detailed Description
American Machine and Foundry (AMF) bought the nearly bankrupt Harley Davidson Motorcycle Company in 1969 for an undisclosed amount of money. AMF operated the company until 1981. In 1981, AMF sold the company to a group of 13 investors led by Vaughn Beals and Willie G. Davidson for $80 million.
