1924 Berliner helicopter

After several years of experimenting with vertical flight, Emile Berliner and his son, Henry Berliner, made the first controlled helicopter flight with this unique looking aircraft.

Looking very little like the helicopter of today, the machine, made with a Nieuport 23 fighter fuselage and triplane wings, was able to maneuver in a radius if 150 feet while maintaining a speed of about 40 MPH. Though unable to perfect a safe and smooth landing, the Berliner helicopter was a step forward in the field of vertical flight.

Detailed Description
On display at the College Park Aviation Museum. On February 24 1924, this Berliner helicopter flew at an altitude of 15 feet and a speed of 40 miles per hour. This flight, held in front of Navy officials and the media, did not perform as well as inventors had hoped, it paved the way for future accomplishments in vertical flight.
Today in Aviation History
