Today in Aviation History
August 1, 1927: Clarence Chamberlain, of Atlantic flight fame, successfully flies off the US ocean liner Leviathan in a Fokker biplane. He ascends from a special runway about 114 ft long when the liner is eight hours out and lands at Curtiss Field. The experiment investigates the possibility of expediting urgent mails and transporting passengers between ship and shore.
