History Trivia:<\/strong> In 1930, the record for flying around the world was not held by a fixed-wing aircraft, but by the Graf Zeppelin, piloted by Hugo Eckener in 1929 with a time of 21 days. On June 23, 1931, Wiley Post and the Australian navigator Harold Gatty left Roosevelt Field on Long Island, New York, in the Winnie Mae with a flight plan that would take them around the world, stopping at Harbour Grace, Flintshire, Hanover twice, Berlin, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Blagoveshchensk, Khabarovsk, Nome (where his propeller had to be repaired), Fairbanks (where the propeller was replaced), Edmonton, and Cleveland before returning to Roosevelt Field. They arrived back on July 1, after traveling 15,474 miles (24,903 km) in the record time of 8 days and 15 hours and 51 minutes, in the first successful aerial circumnavigation by a single-engine monoplane. The reception they received rivaled Charles Lindbergh’s everywhere they went. They had lunch at the White House on July 7, rode in a ticker-tape parade the next day in New York City, and were honored at a banquet given by the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America at the Hotel Astor. After the flight, Post acquired the Winnie Mae from F.C. Hall. He and Gatty published an account of their journey, titled Around the World in Eight Days, with an introduction by Will Rogers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1933, Wiley Post repeated his flight around the world, this time using the auto-pilot and compass in place of his navigator and becoming the first to accomplish the feat alone. He departed from Floyd Bennett Field and continued on to Berlin where repairs were attempted to his autopilot, stopped at K\u00f6nigsberg to replace some forgotten maps, Moscow for more repairs to his autopilot, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk for final repairs to the autopilot, Rukhlovo, Khabarovsk, Flat where his propeller had to be replaced, Fairbanks, Edmonton, and back to Floyd Bennett Field. Fifty thousand people greeted him on his return on July 22 after 7 days, 18 hours, 49 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achievements & Special Recognition<\/strong>: July 16 1969, Apollo 11 launched. This would become the first mission to land humans on the Moon. The Apollo 11 crew (Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin) would fly on the Saturn V rocket that would take them to the Moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

July 24 1969. Apollo 11 returns to earth. This was a major achievement for the Unites States and mankind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation\/Aviators in the news<\/strong>: Amin passed his commercial pilot checkride with Harry in July. Amin is an outstanding student. He will make an excellent flight instructor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Car\/Motorcycle Show News<\/strong>:   The Laytonsville Cruise In<\/a> is the place to be on a Friday night in Montgomery County.  The Laytonsville Cruise In was started by Harry in 2010. It has become one of the most popular cruise ins in the area. You can follow Harry on Facebook<\/a> for daily updates during the many shows and events he attends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 16 2024 is our next award night at the Laytonsville Cruise In<\/a>. We will have about 40 awards to give out. August 16, the feature vehicle will be \u201cBritish vehicles\u201d. We will have a special \u201cBest of Show\u201d award for a British vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a 1960 Cadillac with a Cummins diesel engine that is supercharged and turbocharged. The guy said he built it with this engine because it sounded like a bad idea. Some cool weather facts for this month: The largest snowflake fell in Fortuna Montana is 1887, it was 15 inches in diameter. The largest hailstone fell in Vivian SD in 2010, it was 8 inches in diameter. The coldest temperature was minus 80 degrees in Prospect Alaska in 1971. And the hottest temperature ever measured anywhere was in Death Valley in 1913 and it was 134 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nautical Notes<\/strong>: Early this fall, we will be at some exciting nautical events\/locations. In September we will be at the Wings & Wheels of Hammondsport<\/a>. Harry will have live updates on his Facebook page<\/a>. And in October we will be at the boating capital of the Chesapeake Bay, Deltaville VA<\/a>. Riding The Rails:<\/strong> Here’s a cool experimental train for this month. The Rohr Aerotrain was an experimental high-speed train developed by Rohr Industries, also known as the Urban Tracked Air Cushion Vehicle (UTACV). The train was designed to carry up to 60 passengers at speeds of up to 240 km\/h (150 mph) and featured a sleek design with air cushion technology and a linear induction motor. A test track was built in Pueblo, Colorado, where the prototype reached speeds of up to 233 km\/h (145 mph), but due to funding constraints and the length of the track, the project was never commercialized. The project holds historical significance as an innovative concept in high-speed transportation, but ultimately, other factors and technologies led to the prioritization of different projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Native American Indian Transportation:<\/strong> If you want to experience boating the way that native American Indians did, both Clopper Lake<\/a> and Little Seneca Lake<\/a> have canoes that you can rent by the hour or for the full day. It is an awesome experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animals in the headlines<\/strong>: Our snapping turtle has moved into his new pond. This is nearly 300 gallons. We hope this will last him for many years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
