History Trivia:<\/strong> Harry’s first “flight lesson” happen in August, way back on August 18 1984. It took place out of Martin State Airport<\/a> in a Piper Tomahawk<\/a>, N2346V. And the rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achievements & Special Recognition<\/strong>: Rachel passed her instrument checkride earlier this month with Harry. Great job Rachel. This was her second checkride with Harry. She is headed to MIT with a full scholarship. She was also accepted Princeton, USAF Academy, Coast Guard Academy, Johns Hopkins, and numerous other well known colleges. She wants to be a fighter pilot for the US military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom passed his flight instructor checkride earlier this month with Harry. He did an outstanding job. Every maneuver was textbook perfect. Excellent job Tom. This has been his life goal since he was 14 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation\/Aviators in the news<\/strong>: Over the years, Harry has nominated a few pilots for the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award<\/a>. This month he has started the process for two other aviators that meet the criteria. One of the nominees was the owner of an aircraft that Harry brokered and sold for him. And the other is a retired American Airlines A&P and private pilot. In upcoming newsletters, we’ll have more information on these two aviators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barn Finds\/Hangar Finds:  <\/strong>In the past, we have brought you many barn finds, a wall find<\/a>, hangar finds, mine find (click here for the post on the mine find<\/a>), scrap pile find (click here for the post on the scrap pile find<\/a>), and more. This month we have a curb find (sidewalk find). Harry noticed an old Raleigh bicycle sitting outside of a local bicycle shop (it had been there for a few weeks). One day Harry asked if it was for sale and the owner said that someone just left it there after hours one evening (abandoned it he said). The owner of the shop said to Harry “It’s yours if you want it. Just take it free of charge”. We’re still doing research, however, we believe this to be a 1974 Raleigh Tourist DL-1<\/a>. It now resides in our collection along side some of bicycles made in England; the Coventry Rotarty Tandem<\/a> and the Geared Facile<\/a>. It has found a good home. Weather in the news<\/strong>: A sign of the times. As we get closer to the peak of hurricane season, we tend to see more and more storms in the eastern Atlantic. Here’s a snap shot of the weather may on August 18 2021 showing two tropical storms hitting the states at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We ended August 2021 with a Category 4 hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And on August 30, we had 3 tropical storms in the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prototypes<\/strong>: Often when one thinks of prototypes, we’re envisioning a new car concept or motorcycle, and maybe even an aircraft. This month we’re going to cover some of the unique braking systems found on bicycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first bicycle called a Laufmachine, was designed by Karl Drais in 1817. This bike had a pivoting shoe that was pressed against the rear tire to slow the bike down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 23, 1897, Abram W.\u00a0Duck<\/strong>\u00a0of Duck’s Cyclery in Oakland, California was granted a patent for his Duck Roller Brake (U.S. Patent 594,234). The duck brake used a rod operated by a lever on the handlebar to pull twin rubber rollers against the front tyre, braking the front wheel. This system is very similar to the braking system on our 1974 Raleigh<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our 1885 Geared Facile uses a “spoon” type braking system. This system uses a lever on the handlebars to press a “spoon” against the front wheel to slow the bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Our 1898 Rex bicycle <\/a>uses a small metal plate that presses on the front wheel to slow the bike. The rider is required to remove his\/her feet from the pedals and shift them to this lever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Our 1886 Coventry<\/a> uses a band type brake system. I leather or rubber band is secured around the hub and is operated by a hand lever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Our Raleigh bicycle<\/a> has a Sturmey-Archer 3 speed hub. Sturmey-Archer began in Nottingham England in 1902 with the invention of the world\u2019s first 3-speed internal gear hub for bicycles. The company was founded in 1902 by\u00a0Henry Sturmey<\/a>\u00a0and James Archer under the guidance of\u00a0Frank Bowden<\/a>, the primary owner of Raleigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nautical Notes<\/strong>: Did you know??? A few of the songs from London Town, the sixth studio album by Paul McCartney’s band “Wings” were recorded on a yacht named “Fair Carol” while in the Virgin Islands.  The working title of the album was “Water Wings”. The idea of recording songs on a boat most likely came from Denny Laine whom made a visit to a floating studio in the United States. Paul McCartney arranged for a recording studio to be built on the yacht Fair Carol. Paul and Linda hired another yacht to serve as a floating home for themselves and their three daughters, while a third chartered yacht housed Wings Joe English, Jimmy McCulloch, and Denny Laine. Here’s another cool piece for this month with a nautical theme as well as a Beatles theme (sort of). The Beatles as well as Paul McCartney have performed in the Netherlands numerous times. And the Netherlands is home to the very unique Veluwemeer Aqueduct<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
