{"id":3570,"date":"2019-10-12T18:09:59","date_gmt":"2019-10-12T23:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flymall.org\/blog\/?p=3570"},"modified":"2021-03-05T10:41:38","modified_gmt":"2021-03-05T15:41:38","slug":"pretest-briefing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flymall.org\/blog\/2019\/10\/pretest-briefing\/","title":{"rendered":"Pretest Briefing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PRETEST BRIEFING (Per 8900.1 Vol 5 Chapter 2)<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the practical test, I am required to give you 4 briefings; Pretest Briefing, Preflight Briefing, Flight Test Briefing, and a Post Flight Briefing.\u00a0 At the end of the practical test, I will ask that you sign a document stating that I did give you these briefings.<\/p>\n<p>1. Put the applicant at ease (small talk, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Is flying a new career path or just a hobby?.<br \/>\nHow did you get interested in flying?<br \/>\nWhat other hobbies or activities do you enjoy?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flymall.org\/magento\/index.php\/lesson-plans\/faa-wings-program.html\">Are you familiar with the FAA Wings Program<\/a>?\u00a0 Visit Flymall.org and search for FAAWings (all one word).<\/p>\n<p>2. Advise applicant of available comfort facilities<\/p>\n<p>3. Pilot Bill of Rights (PBR). Due to the legal definition by the FAA attorneys the practical exam that a DPE conducts is considered an investigation because of the review of their application and their skills.<\/p>\n<p>4. Confirm type of practical test or retest<\/p>\n<p>5. Provide casual overview of the test. If you do not pass an AOO in the ground portion, you have the option to continue the ground but not the flight portion. If you do not pass an AOO in the flight, you can continue. I have the option to stop the test. You cannot record this test, either audio or video. If I find out you are recording, we stop the test.\u00a0 Per March 2021 DPE class, we cannot do the test in a classroom that has video monitoring\/recording.<\/p>\n<p>6. Collect\/Verify the required documents specified during the appointment<br \/>\n\u2022 FAA Form 8710-11, Airman Certificate and\/or Rating Application<br \/>\n\u2022 Medical (note limitations)<br \/>\n\u2022 Knowledge test results (if appropriate)<br \/>\n\u2022 Logbook or training records (Verify that the applicant meets all requirements and appropriate endorsements)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flymall.org\/blog\/2019\/10\/private-pilot-aeronautical-experience\/\">Private Pilot Aeronautical Experience<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Instrument Rating Requirements<\/p>\n<p>Commercial Pilot Requirements<\/p>\n<p>141 Requirements<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Aircraft documents (Verify location &amp; scheduled availability)<br \/>\nExaminer: establish applicant eligibility, establish aircraft eligibility, validate applicant\u2019s knowledge test.\u00a0 Per March 2021 DPE class, it is acceptable for the applicant just to bring copies of the logbooks (not the actual logbook).\u00a0 The DPE can just see a copy of the most recent annual inspection and 91.411 and 91.413 cert entries to determine if the aircraft is airworthy.\u00a0 Per a March 2021 DPE class, the examiner is required to see a current AD list to verify that the plane is airworthy.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1khyJpqfzKo0egrD2G403QifX6ev20mZI\/view?usp=sharing\">If you school or A&amp;P does not agree with this requirement, here is a screen shot from the DPE recurrent class showing this requirement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>7. Verify that required equipment (hood, etc.) is available<\/p>\n<p>8. Verify that applicant is aware of PTS\/ACS requirements and tolerances<\/p>\n<p>9. Advise the applicant that:<br \/>\n\u2022 FAA Practical Test IAW the PTS\/ACS<br \/>\n\u2022 Will be using a Plan of Action (Used to organize the Practical Test)<br \/>\n\u2022 Will be taking notes for the debrief<br \/>\n\u2022 Perfection is not the standard &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Failure items not limited to the following:\u00a0 If I am required to takeover to save the plane.\u00a0 Not doing a maneuver correctly, for example, doing a soft field takeoff with 0 flaps.\u00a0 Descending excessively during a steep turn.\u00a0 Constantly descending during a pylon eight.\u00a0 Pushing the nose down or forward during a landing.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>From the Private Pilot ACS regarding failures:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>Unsatisfactory Performance<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>Typical areas of unsatisfactory performance and grounds for disqualification include:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>\u2022 Any action or lack of action by the applicant that requires corrective intervention by the evaluator to<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>maintain safe flight.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>\u2022 Failure to use proper and effective visual scanning techniques to clear the area before and while<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>performing maneuvers.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>\u2022 Consistently exceeding tolerances stated in the skill elements of the Task.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>\u2022 Failure to take prompt corrective action when tolerances are exceeded.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>\u2022 Failure to exercise risk management.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Oral questioning will continue throughout the test<br \/>\n\u2022 Three possible outcomes are:<br \/>\no Temporary Airman Certificate \u2013 Good for 120 days.<br \/>\no Notice of Disapproval of Application \u2013 Good for 60 days.<br \/>\no Letter of Discontinuance \u2013 Good for 60 days.<br \/>\n10.
