This month we should remember the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001. Here is Harry’s story as he experienced it from inside a cockpit not knowing what was happening<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have a lot of interesting news this month. This month, we’re featuring the Wings & Wheels of Hammondsport event<\/a>. Next month, our big feature will be our visit to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum<\/a> and their annual Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival. Earlier in September we celebrated Labor Day to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States. History Trivia:<\/strong> Anne-France Dautheville is a French journalist that received world wide recognition in 1973 for becoming the first woman to motorcycle solo around the world. She did this trip on a Kawasaki 125. The trip was over 12, 000 miles. She started participating in motorcycle tours in 1972.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 21, 1893, the Duryea brothers road-tested the second-ever American gasoline-powered automobile, after the Buckeye gasoline buggy invented in 1891 by John William Lambert. The Duryea’s “motor wagon” was a used horse drawn buggy that the brothers had purchased for $70 and into which they had installed a 4 HP, single cylinder gasoline engine. The car (buggy) had a friction transmission, spray carburetor and low tension ignition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achievements & Special Recognition<\/strong>: This month, we’re giving some special recognition to Corey, a flight instructor at the Washington International Flight Academy. While most of us were celebrating the un-official end of summer on Labor Day, Corey was working hard training future pilots. And one such pilot was an international student working on his multi-engine rating. This was to be Corey’s last flight of the day. The plane they were flying was a 1972 Piper Seneca PA-34-200. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As they returned to the Montgomery County Airport and prepared to land, they discovered that the gear would not extend. They tried a few times using the normal method which included recycling the gear a few times. Eventually, they had to extend the gear using the emergency gear extension system. The emergency gear extension system worked to get the main gear down, however, the nose gear would not extend. They stayed near the airport to troubleshoot the issue. Some of the methods they tried were to pull some Gs to get the nose wheel to extend as well as steep turns. After they exhausted all possible solutions, they had to land the plane without the nose gear extended. Corey displayed the highest level of professionalism throughout this emergency. Click here for one of the audio files<\/a> of Corey calmly communicating with other pilots on the ground receiving advice and assistance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this audio file, you’ll hear Corey explaining that he is doing low approaches to simulate the landing<\/a>. What you do not hear is how Corey was actively instructing\/explaining to the student what each of them will be doing during the actual landing and what tasks each one will do to safely secure the plane as they touch down and slide on the nose of the plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was extremely important that Corey ensured that the aircraft was perfectly aligned on the runway centerline and that the aircraft’s movement was straight because once they touched down and the nose was on the runway, they would not have directional control. Look at the pictures below. The fact that the aircraft slid to a stop with the nose on the runway centerline is a testament to just how perfectly Corey executed the landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in September, Ariel passed her private pilot checkride with Harry. She did an excellent job. She is a natural pilot. Ariel plans to be an airline pilot like her mom. Her brother, Eytan was her instructor. Ariel is only 17 years old and she does not have her driver’s license yet. She can fly a plane anywhere in the world, however, she cannot drive herself to the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation\/Aviators in the news<\/strong>: September 19 was the annual Wings & Wheels event<\/a> in Hammondsport New York. The Flymall Team<\/a> was there for the weekend covering the event. On Friday night, September 18, they were at Depot Park <\/a>where some of the seaplanes were arriving\/gathering for the big event Saturday morning.
