World Pilots’ Day in 2026 was celebrated on Sunday April 26. This international day recognizes the contributions, professionalism, and dedication of pilots in safely transporting millions of passengers annually. Established by the International Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations (IFALPA) in 2013. The date commemorates the first flight of Mehmet Fesa Evrensev, a pivotal figure in Turkish aviation, on April 26, 1912.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History Trivia:<\/strong> April 12 1927, Major Henry O\u2019Neil de Hane Segrave became the first man to break the 200 mph barrier, driving the 1,000 hp Myster Sunbeam to an average of 203.79 mph at Daytona Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 29 1971, the Piper PA-48 Enforcer made it’s first flight. It had a Lycoming turboprop engine that produced 2445 shp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achievements & Special Recognition<\/strong>: On April 8, Li Samara passed her multi engine checkride. Her DPE said that she did a great job. Harry surprised her with a cake to celebrate this achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation\/Aviators in the news<\/strong>: April 4 1921, 1921 Shirley Slade was born. She was on the July 19,1943 cover of LIFE Magazine. Shirley was a member of the WASP. During her time in service she was stationed at three different bases (Love Field, Dallas, Texas; Dodge City AAF, Kansas and Harlingen AAF, Texas) and primarily flew Bell P-39 Airacobra and Martin B-26 Marauder. Both the P-39 and B-26 were notoriously difficult aircraft to fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 8 1893, Georgia Ann “Tiny” Thompson Broadwick was born. She got the nickname Tiny because she was so small. She weighed 85 pounds and was 4 feet 8 inches high. She was married at age 12 and had a daughter by age 13. Among her many other achievements, she was the first woman to parachute from an airplane, which she is sometimes credited with accomplishing over Los Angeles on June 21, 1913, with aviator Glenn L. Martin as the pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Car\/Motorcycle Show News<\/strong>:\u00a0 \u00a0The\u00a0Laytonsville Cruise In<\/a>\u00a0is the place to be on a Friday night in Montgomery County.\u00a0 The Laytonsville Cruise In was started by Harry in 2010. It has become one of the most popular cruise ins in the area. You can follow\u00a0Harry on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for daily updates during the many shows and events he attends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 15 2026 is the official opening night for the Laytonsville Cruise In<\/a> and it is the first award night of the season. Kraemer Aviation will be sponsoring free ice cream for drivers and one passenger (see Pat or Harry<\/a> for your free ice cream coupon). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 17 1964 Ford Mustang was introduced to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 1 1949, Hiroko Hori <\/strong>was born. Hiroko Hori (1949\u20131985) was a trailblazer in Japanese motorsport and is widely celebrated as the nation’s first female professional motorcycle racer. Her story began with a simple Honda Super Cub, a modest machine that sparked a passion for two wheels launching her on a ground-breaking career through the 1970s and early 1980s. In 1976 – at a time when female riders were officially barred from competition in her homeland – Hori shattered gender barriers by participating in a Japanese road race. Her exceptional performance led to a change in regulations, opening the doors for women to take part in Japanese motorsport. With ambitions beyond the racetrack, Hori also embarked on a 40,000 km journey across 25 countries on a 1975 Honda CB750F, showcasing her adventurous spirit. In 1978, she also co-founded the “Powder Puff” race, Japan’s first women-only motorcycle competition, and established “Hirokono” a motorcycle gear shop catering exclusively for female riders. Among her racing highlights were back-to-back appearances in the 4-hour endurance race at Suzuka Circuit in 1980 and 1981, riding as part of a two rider female team on a 400cc Suzuki twin. Tackling over 200 miles of intense racing, Hori and her co-pilot proved they could compete head-to-head in one of Japan\u2019s toughest motorsport events. A gifted storyteller as well, Hori chronicled her adventures through books and travelogues. One of her most famous works, \u201cMe and the Sahara and Motorcycle\u201d, details her grueling 8,000 km trek across the Sahara Desert on a Suzuki DR500. Tragically, Hori passed away in 1985 while preparing for a new adventure in China’s Taklamakan Desert. Her legacy of adventure and freedom is something that all motorcyclists can identify with; and the fact that women are now accepted as part of the fabric of motorcycle racing is testament to her and other pioneering female competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veronika recently renewed her flight instructor certificate with Harry. She will soon be working at the Washington International Flight Academy. Here’s Harry presenting Veronika Knurenko<\/a> with her dog tags for passing her flight instructor checkride. These are made by a FAA friend of Harry’s with an authentic WWII dog tag machine. Each dog tag has their name on it, type of checkride, and date of checkride on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
