May 19, 1917: National aircraft insignia - May 19, 1917 - A white star with a red dot in its center on a blue circle, and vertical red-white-blue stripes on the rudder was approved by the Army. This was temporarily replaced in Feb 1918 by a concentric red-blue-white circle until the end of World War I.
