September 9, 1948: Capt. James T. Fitzgerald, the second Air Force pilot to exceed the speed of sound, is fatally injured in the crash of the third Lockheed FT-80C (T-33) jet trainer following a low-speed stall during a tight landing approach turn at Metropolitan Airport, Van Nuys, CA. Fitzgerald had first exceeded the speed of sound April 6, 1948, during a test flight in the experimental Bell X-1 #1, and had also participated in the Boeing XB-47 Stratojet flight-test program.
